"The Greatest Accessory Of All" by: Junita Thiessen

People care to much.
How their hair looks
or their clothes.
They don't care about what matters
The soul

The soul is what truly matters
that thing that is deep inside.
The soul is always fashionable
no matter what the season is.

The soul is something that changes color a million times
from when you are born to when you die.
My soul is yellow today
because I'm happy inside.

On Thursday my soul was green
for I envied another girl.

The soul is by far the best accessory you can have.
And that's what they should write in the magazines.

Way too many people in today's day and age obsess over their appearance and what others think of them.  What people do not realize is that it is not what is on the outside that matters, it is what is on the inside.  The author does an excellent job of expressing her views on this subject.  She mentions how the soul changes color a million times because as we mature and develope as human beings we change constantly. Our views and mindset are continually changing as well.  The way the author presents these true values is unique and for that I really like this poem.

"Dream" by: Margaret Elizabeth Sangster

Sometimes I dream that you are back with me,
And that with hands together clasped we go
Like little children, young and glad and free,
A-down a magic road we used to know.
Sometimes I dream your eyes upon my face,
And feel your fingers softly touch my hair....
And when I wake from dreaming all the place,
Seems lonelier because you are not there.

What is a dream? Not very much, they say,
An idle vision made in castled Spain--
Well, maybe they are right.... And yet, today,
When all the warring world was swept with pain,
The suffering and sorrow ceased to be,
Because I dreamed that you were back with me!

I like this poem because of the powerful subject it is about.  It questions dreams and then defends them.  Dreams are magical and are something to be cherished.  They can be scary on occasions, but they can also be exciting and thrilling.  We can not always get what we want in life, but dreams are a way to escape the harsh reality into a safer world.  Dreams can be a safe haven where anything is possible and I think the author does a wonderful job presenting this point.

"My Memory Library" by Sarah Blackstone

Imagine if I was given one moment,
just a single slice of my past.
I could hold it close forever,
and that moment would always last.

I'd put the moment in a safe,
within my hearts abode.
I could open it when I wanted,
and only I would know the code.

I could choose a time of laughing,
a time of happiness and fun.
I could choose a time that tried me,
through everything I've done.

I sat and thought about what moment,
would always make me smile.
One that would always push me,
to walk that extra mile.

If I'm feeling sad and low,
if I'm struggling with what to do.
I can go and open my little safe,
and watch my moment through.

There are moments I can think of,
that would lift my spirits everytime.
The moments when you picked me up,
when the road was hard to climb.

For me to only pick one moment,
to cherish, save and keep,
Is proving really difficult,
as I've gathered up a heap!

I've dug deep inside my heart,
found the safe and looked inside,
there was room for lots of moments,
in fact hundreds if I tried.

I'm building my own little library,
embedded in my heart,
for all the moments spent with you,
before you had to part.

I can open it up whenever I like,
pick a moment and watch it through,
My little library acts as a promise,
I'll never ever forget you

I picked this peom out because of how inspirational it was when I read it.  Losing a loved one is a very hard thing to have to go through and I have experienced this first hand.  The author wrote this poem to help people remember the good times when they are at their lowest.  She helps readers to realize unlocking the large chest of memories helps to deal with the loss of our loved ones and saving the good memories are the best ways to deal with the great loss.  This poem also helps us to know that we have to look back and focus on the positive times and not the bad times.  Although sometimes you have to experience a bad time to know how a good time feels.

"Be Glad Your Nose Is On Your Face" by Jack Prelutsky

Be glad your nose is on your face,
not pasted on some other place,
for if it were where it is not,
you might dislike your nose a lot.

Imagine if your precious nose
were sandwiched in between your toes,
that clearly would not be a treat,
for you'd be forced to smell your feet.

Your nose would be a source of dread
were it attached atop your head,
it soon would drive you to despair,
forever tickled by your hair.

Within your ear, your nose would be
an absolute catastrophe,
for when you were obliged to sneeze,
your brain would rattle from the breeze.

Your nose, instead, through thick and thin,
remains between your eyes and chin,
not pasted on some other place--
be glad your nose is on your face!

I like this poem because although it is short and fun, it has an important meaning behind it: be happy with who you are.  Most people look at the negative things they wish they could fix about themselves, but this poem helps demonstrate how we are the way that we are for a reason.  Of course we could be made a different way or possibly look different, but as the poem shows things could always be worse and we are perfect just being ourselves.  I like the way Jack Prelutsky has written this poem.  It rhymes and is playful and honestly I think it is a little funny, yet the statement Prelutsky is trying to make is clear.  All of this makes it a great poem that is appropriate for any audience.

To be honest, I'm not sure how to work any of this.  It seems a little complicated, but maybe if I write another poem about Mrs. Coleman she'll give me an A this time. :)
